30 Day Financial Transition Challenge Day 27: Developing Networks

Welcome to Day Twenty-Seven of the “30 Day Financial Transition Challenge.”  Today’s article focuses on developing your personal and professional networks.

Bottom Line Up Front (BLUF) 

Your transition can be a very stressful time, and it’s important to have a network of people who can support you.  Today, we’re going to focus on the network you’ve already established and find opportunities to strengthen that network. 


Networking is an important part of your transition.  Whether you’ve already established yourself in your community, social circles, or your professional network, it’s vital to take stock of where you currently stand, and where you’d like to be.

Since your transition can be stressful, you should be able to reach out within your network for assistance, employment opportunities, or moral support.  It’s also beneficial to have a network of people who recognize the value that you add, whatever that value might be.


Today’s goal is to help you capture where you currently stand, and to establish a checklist that will help you expand, strengthen, or leverage your networks to support your goals.

What you need



This exercise consists of a simple checklist of questions to help frame your approach.

  1. Are you staying local or moving?     
  • If you’re moving, how can you leverage your current networks to make new connections?
  • If you’re staying local, how can you strengthen, broaden, or solidify your network?
  1. Do you already have a job lined up?              
  • If not, what networks or contacts would help you get the job you need?
    • What organizations are you a part of? What can you join?
    • How much time do you have to establish yourself?
    • Are there opportunities in your community?
  • If so, don’t get complacent.
    • You should always be working to expand your network. Most military retirees leave their first civilian job within 3 years.
    • You don’t know when you need to leverage your network.
  1. Do your networks align with your other goals?          
  • Do you need to join that ‘additional network’ just because you feel you need to?
  • Your network activities can reflect your values (i.e. community involvement, school boards, church, etc.)
  • How can you expand your networks in ways that support your goals?
    • If you volunteer within your community, can you take on a leadership position?
  1. Networking Groups
  • What networking groups are in your local area? When & how often do they meet?
  1. Social Networking   
  • This counts, whether you believe it or not.
  • What does your LinkedIn profile look like? Some bases offer Linkedin classes.  Take advantage of them.


By the end of today’s exercise, you should have a good understanding of your post-military physical health and what goals you would like to establish.

Tomorrow, we’ll look at your cash flow situation.  Since you’ve had the opportunity to evaluate your cash flow & budget from different angles, it’s time to start putting everything together.
